Church History

DSCN4553History of Our Church

When four men and six women gathered to confess their faith at then South Kirtland Congregational Church on September 5, 1819, the village of Kirtland was 8 years old. All ten had been members of Congregational churches in Connecticut or Massachusetts and were descendants of the first Congregationalists - the Pilgrims and the Puritans.

These original members were staunch believers in God who looked forward to an unknown future. Their faith was built on a rock of faith. (As the hymn proclaims: "Built on the rock, the Church doth stand.")

As Old South United Church of Christ, we continue to build on that rock of faith, embracing the uncharted path that lies before us in serving members in 24 cities and townships in Lake, Geauga, Cuyahoga and Ashtabula counties. In addition, residents in 14 other communities throughout the United States attend and/or support Old South Church.

Our efforts on behalf of the hungry never stop. Our Food Pantry feeds neighbors in closest proximity, and we provide dinners for Project Hope in Lake County and St. Paul's UCC in Cleveland; process food at the Cleveland Food Bank; and walk to raise funds for the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland.

We also "feed the sheep" by sharing our story of love and welcome through worship in a sanctuary lovingly maintained by generations of devoted members and friends. Our New England heritage is everywhere, from the simple pews and high-arched windows to the hand-carved altar table and baptismal font.

We are an Open and Affirming congregation that vows to follow Jesus's directive to treat thy neighbor as you wish to be treated; to love and respect every person. We are lawyers and teachers, writers and community leaders. We are electricians and construction workers, physical therapists and business owners. We are retired folks and children, unemployed and accountants.

We want you to know that no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome at Old South United Church of Christ.
